About the Role
We are looking for an experienced Project / Design Engineer to lead the delivery of Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) conversion projects. This is a hands-on role combining engineering design, project leadership, regulatory compliance, and process improvement within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
You will play a key role in ensuring projects are delivered right-first-time, fully compliant with UK/EU regulations, and aligned with production needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead full project lifecycle (scope, planning, delivery, and handover)
- Manage cross-functional stakeholders (Sales, Procurement, Production, Stores)
- Develop engineering designs using SolidWorks (DFM/DFA principles)
- Create and maintain:
- Build manuals & work instructions
- Process maps (VSM / SIPOC)
- Technical documentation and change control
- Ensure compliance with VCA Type Approval and relevant UK/EU regulations
- Define quality gates (goods-in, in-process, final inspection)
- Support supplier setup, specifications, and quality standards
- Lead root cause analysis (RCA) and continuous improvement initiatives
- Plan and support vehicle testing (including overseas)
- Deliver training and H&S toolbox talks across teams
- Maintain engineering governance (BOMs, ERP, change management)
What You’ll Need
- Degree in Engineering (Mechanical / Automotive or related)
- 4+ years’ experience in a Project or Design Engineering role
- Strong SolidWorks and technical drawing experience
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes (steelwork/fabrication)
- Experience with vehicle regulations / type approval (UK/EU)
- Proven ability to manage projects and multiple stakeholders
- Strong problem-solving skills (5 Whys, Ishikawa, etc.)
- Excellent communication and organisational skills
Desirable
- WAV, automotive or conversion experience
- Electrical/ Wiring problem solving experience
- Knowledge of VCA approval processes
- ERP systems experience (e.g., Unleashed)
- Lean / Continuous Improvement background
