Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles & Pets

Here at McElmeel Mobility Services, many of our customers tell us that one of the key reasons they have chosen us as a supplier of their wheelchair accessible vehicle, is our commitment to real customer service. We continually strive to innovate vehicles and adaptations that are truly fit for purpose, giving customers a vehicle that suits them, not just something that roles off the conveyor belt. On the face of it, WAV's can look very similar, but when it comes to having a vehicle adapted to meet the needs of disabled drivers and passengers, the ability to offer complimentary adaptations to a WAV does make a massive difference to people's quality of life over a 5 year period.

Pets are an important part of many families and in the world of wheelchair accessible vehicles this is even more common. Animals, especially dogs, are used in many different ways to support people with disabilities, from pets to guide dogs, from hearing dogs to assistance dogs. Going for a spin with your dog in the car beside you is as old a pastime as driving itself, so travelling in a WAV with your pet is something what we often hear being discussed. One question we hear asked is "How can I travel with my Pet"

The Highway Code clarifies the responsibilities of the driver on how we travel with our pets. Rule 57 states; "When in a vehicle, make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars."

Wheelchair accessible vehicles are modified, typically to allow a wheelchair user to access the vehicle from the rear of the vehicle; this often means seats are removed or space may be limited. How you travel with your pet will therefore be dependent on your pet, your car and how you want them to travel.

At McElmeel Mobility services we can work with you to plan how best to travel with your pet. We will support you by adapting your car to help you safely travel with your pet in a way that suits you. For example, if you need to secure a pet cage, we can fit the correct supporting points. If you want to use a "dog harness with seat belt connection" we can fit an extra seat belt stalk.

If you are changing your WAV and you would like to travel with your pet, phone McElmeel Mobility Services on 02837 525333 to talk to anyone from our WAV team as we are always very happy to help.
