Before Patrick met McElmeel Mobility the thought that one day he would be driving his own car never crossed his mind, you see Patrick suffers from Brittle Bone Condition leaving him vertically challenged and extremely fragile. Due to these conditions Patrick has found that being "assisted into someone else's vehicle can be a hazardous experience." Also when travelling with the others there is the small matter of where to store his wheelchair.

Patrick with almost 5 years driving behind him now is driving a Rover 200 fully fitted out to his own unique requirements. The system is fully automated and Patrick is able to transfer unaided in approx. 90 seconds. |
Being able to drive has given Patrick personal freedom and more, "having my own car not only allows me to have a private personal life where I can do my own thing and have my own space but also gives me more confidence within myself".
It has also opened up new windows of opportunity for the future. Patrick says that his vehicle has allowed him to, "choose from a wider range of universities and will hopefully help when I finish my studies, having my own car will help me to get more career opportunities than would be available without it."
Finally Patrick puts things in perspective and makes it abundantly clear how much his car means to him, "assume that you have just lost your license and that your car has been taken away, to an able bodied person that would be an inconvenience but to me that would be a catastrophe." |
